Song for Coda was written for Tamaryn Mirabito, principal flugel horn of the Brisbane Excelsior Brass Band. Tamaryn has one of the sweetest, purest flugel sounds I’ve sat next to, and this piece grew out of a simple rehearsal conversation about what she might play in the 2023 Besson Slow Melody Competition at the Queensland State Championships. Nothing seemed to “speak” to her, so I went away and wrote this slow melody for her – and for her beautiful puppy, Coda.
The work showcases slow, lyrical flugel playing, with suspensions and stresses across the bar line that give the melody a gentle push and pull. The character is serene yet playful, with an almost dance‑like interplay between soloist and piano accompaniment. It sits comfortably in the slow melody contest tradition while offering something fresh and personal.
Tamaryn premiered Song for Coda in the competition and went on to win the entire Slow Melody section. This is a digital, immediate‑download PDF (solo flugel horn part and piano accompaniment), ideal for contests, recitals and concert features.
