For Solo Tenor Horn and Piano
Composed and performed by the composer
Where Things Flourish is a deeply personal work for solo tenor horn and piano, inspired by a very special milestone: building our first home together with my husband, on a block of land in a new estate on the outskirts of Brisbane — aptly named Flourish. That sense of new beginnings, growth, and quiet joy became the seed for this piece.
Written for solo competition performance, this work was one I thoroughly enjoyed bringing to life on stage. One adjudicator memorably described it as “part Disney, part musical theatre, and part gorgeous” — and honestly, I’ll take that!
The piece opens with a small, playful semiquaver motif — almost like a grace note tiptoeing in — before blossoming into a soaring, lyrical melody. From there, the music travels through a key change (or two — no apologies here!), before returning home to the original theme in its closing moments, much like the journey of building a home itself.
The recording you’ll hear is me performing the piece myself — most of the right notes included! I hope Where Things Flourish brings you as much joy to play (or listen to) as it did for me to write and perform.
Listen to the recording below, and consider adding this heartfelt work for tenor horn and piano to your own repertoire.
