Halcyon — for B-Flat Cornet

Halcyon was originally written for clarinettist Bethan Jones during the composer’s final year at the Royal Northern College of Music. As the title suggests, the work reflects a halcyon period — a time remembered for its calm, warmth, and quiet happiness. Inspired by a deeply rewarding chapter of study and artistic growth, the piece captures that sense of serenity in an elegant and expressive musical language.

Originally conceived for clarinet, Halcyon has been successfully adapted for B-flat cornet and is also well suited to flugelhorn, euphonium, baritone, or B-flat bass. Its lyrical style and broad expressive range make it a rewarding choice for both performers and audiences.

Halcyon was selected as the Open Flugel Horn test piece for the 2026 Australian National Championships in Brisbane.
