Be Thou My Vision (tune: Slane) is a full brass band arrangement of the beloved 8th‑century Irish hymn, rooted in traditional Irish folksong. Scored for full brass band and percussion, this setting is designed to showcase every section of the ensemble across the course of the piece.

The work opens with a simple, intimate idea from the principal cornet. After a brief flourish, the theme emerges in the trombones, baritone and flugel, then travels through a shifting landscape of keys and colours. Throughout, the arrangement balances lyrical writing with moments of brilliance, giving each section meaningful material while keeping the hymn tune clearly at the heart of the music.

Everything builds to a broad, satisfying climax: a full, sonorous statement of the complete theme, with the whole band united in a powerful, resonant texture. The piece then draws back to close as subtly as it began, leaving the melody lingering in the air.

With its clear structure, expressive demands and opportunities for balanced section work, this arrangement is perfect for Australian and New Zealand brass band championships, as well as concerts, worship occasions and contests where a well‑known hymn tune and musicality are in focus.

Estimated difficulty: B Grade / 2nd Section.
