A tribute work, composed in memory of Scott Fixter
In the Stillness is a soft, reflective concert work written as a dedication to Scott Fixter, a life-member of the Brisbane Excelsior Band who lost his life to cancer after a courageous battle. A stalwart of the band’s back row and a familiar face as Drum Major, Scott’s memory is honoured here with warmth, dignity, and quiet strength.
The piece opens with a gentle melody carried by the flugel horn, before the theme is heroically taken up by the back row — the section Scott called home for so many years — with tender interjections from the soprano cornet weaving throughout.
Written for his wife, Jaime Fixter, whose own courage throughout Scott’s illness and her ongoing dedication to raising funds for cancer research inspired much of the work’s emotional core, In the Stillness is as much a tribute to resilience and love as it is to memory.
At the heart of the piece lies a small interlude featuring gentle nods to “Colonel Bogey” — a fitting and affectionate touch, as it was Scott’s chosen street march at nearly every Australian National Brass Band Championship during his years as Drum Major, and remains one of the composer’s most vivid memories of him.
A piece of genuine heart, In the Stillness offers bands the opportunity to perform something deeply personal — a quiet moment of reflection, remembrance, and hope.
