Australian Odysseys is a seven-movement brass band suite that celebrates the landscapes, landmarks, and spirit of Australia in vivid musical portraits. Inspired by works such as Windows of the World and Hymns of the Highlands, it combines memorable themes, lyrical solos, dramatic contrast, and colourful ensemble writing into one cohesive and rewarding concert work.
1. Flight Over Kakadu — NT
A thrilling opening movement inspired by scenic flights over Kakadu National Park. From the tense lift-off of a small aircraft to the expansive sweep of the landscape below, this movement builds into a soaring and memorable musical journey, with a recurring theme that returns throughout the suite.
2. Wineglass Bay — TAS
A lyrical tenor horn solo inspired by the beauty of Freycinet National Park and the secluded shoreline of Wineglass Bay. Elegant, expressive, and deeply singable, this movement showcases the full warmth and range of the instrument, with a beautiful climactic top D and a heartfelt return of the opening theme.
3. Supercell — WA
A dramatic and high-energy depiction of a supercell storm over Perth. Turbulent textures, driving momentum, and fierce brass writing capture the raw power and unpredictability of Western Australia’s extreme weather.
4. Barossa Valley — SA
A graceful quartet for cornet, flugel horn, baritone, and E-flat bass that evokes the relaxed charm of South Australia’s famous wine region. Warm, lyrical writing and rich ensemble colours paint an idyllic musical picture of rolling countryside and easy elegance.
5. Melbourne Cup Day — VIC
A spirited celebration of one of Australia’s most iconic cultural events. Full of energy, pageantry, and race-day excitement, this movement captures the atmosphere of the Melbourne Cup as much as the race itself.
6. Glasshouse Whispers — QLD
A haunting soprano cornet solo inspired by the striking Glasshouse Mountains near Brisbane. Written for Brisbane Excelsior’s Jaime Fixter, this movement offers an atmospheric and expressive showcase that is also available as a standalone piece with brass band or piano.
7. Sydney Opera House — NSW
A triumphant finale paying tribute to one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. Drawing on operatic references from The Marriage of Figaro, Tristan and Isolde, and Carmen, the movement builds to a rousing close with a powerful statement of Advance Australia Fair.
