Description

In Motion is a three-movement sonata for B-flat cornet and piano that explores different states of energy, motion, and resonance.

I. Momentum

The opening movement, Momentum, is a perpetual motion piece, reminiscent of both a toccata and a fanfare. It features a nearly constant stream of semiquavers shared between the cornet and piano, creating a sense of relentless, forward-driving energy. This movement juxtaposes the soft, focused timbre of the cup mute with rapid, virtuosic passages, creating a unique tension between quiet restraint and unbridled speed.

II. Drift

Drift provides a sharp contrast, offering a moment of quiet reflection. Utilising the harmon mute throughout, the movement pays homage to a more laid-back era. It begins with a minor, melancholic mood that gradually evolves into something more hopeful and positive, yet it never reaches a point of euphoria. The music simply drifts toward a gentle, optimistic close.

III. Ricochet

The final movement, Ricochet, is an energetic and rhythmically complex finale. It is defined by its angular intervals and intricate compound rhythms. The cornet and piano are at their most synchronised here, phasing in and out of unison to create a sense of unified purpose. The cornet uses a straight mute, adding a harder attack and harsher timbre to the already forceful character of the music. The movement’s title reflects the music’s rebounding, unpredictable nature.
