Moonscapes is an 18-minute major work and test piece for elite brass band — cinematic, high-octane, and unapologetically dramatic. Written between 2016 and 2019, this original composition draws inspiration from the moonlit soundworlds of Ludwig van Beethoven, Glenn Miller, and Claude Debussy. Rather than a traditional arrangement or pastiche, familiar musical echoes flicker in and out of view before being propelled into a bold, modern brass band landscape.

Movement Narrative & Musical Structure

The piece explodes into life with a blazing fanfare before plunging headlong into a relentless toccata. Fast-paced semiquavers fly, tonalities twist, and the band shifts between biting unison lines and full-throttle color in seconds. Horns introduce a soaring melody over unexpected Latin grooves before everything snaps into a razor-sharp, quirky motif. This opening section drives relentlessly toward a fearless cornet and euphonium duet that refuses to back down.

Then — space.

The second section opens with a glowing flugelhorn solo, rich with warmth and nostalgia. The music gradually unfolds into an iconic chord sequence shimmering through tuned percussion while the principal cornet sings above it. The orchestration grows broader and more luminous, culminating in a sweeping Largamente that lets the full ensemble soar.

The final movement bursts in just as the audience catches their breath. A mischievous compound-time scherzo throws technical melodies around the ensemble with infectious energy. Meters shift, momentum builds, and a hypnotic minimalist interlude locks the listener in place before the music reignites in a fierce Fuoco — a fiery callback to the opening toccata. A fleeting, moonlit nod to Debussy gives way to a thrilling, high-impact finish.
